STONE STRUCTURE.
The stone enclosure system consists of 12" coursed rubble limestone
and 4" glazed tile laterally supported by masonry encased columns.
ADVANTAGES. Adjustable to
deviations in field dimensions, job site cutting and fitting, long
life, relatively maintenance free exterior and easily cleaned interior.
DISADVANTAGES. Irregularities of
the natural material require; increase thickness compared with other
walls meeting the same design criteria, units be cut and dressed increasing lead time.
Larger more difficult to handle units. Scarcity of qualified stone
masons.
CONCLUSIONS. This enclosure
system provides a long term maintenance free installation but at
increased life cycle cost. Over
estimated energy consumption based on published steady state "U"
values rather than capacity insulation may contribute to part of
the increased cost. The addition of rigid insulation between stone
and tile would also decrease energy consumption. An alternative
stone enclosure system would be modular storie panel construction.
Panels 4' wide and 10' high would be erected similar to precast
concrete and have similar advantages and disadvantages while
maintaining the aesthetics of stone but at a different scale. |
